The Central Australian outback can seem so remote and isolated and planning your self-drive adventure requires a lot of preparation. One thing is for sure though. You will want to discover its untouched wilderness and beauty, the flora and fauna, culture, its people and history, but where do you start?

Developed and recorded by an experienced professional tour guide, DIY Tourguide currently offers informative tours from Alice Springs to Uluru and the Red Centre Way (West MacDonnell Ranges). Take a detailed look at our current DIY Tourguide itineraries...

Alice to Uluru Audio Tour

Alice Springs to Uluru Audio Tour

Right in the heart of Australia, in the Red Centre, sits Australia’s most famous Outback town. Alice Springs and its spectacular surrounds offers a huge variety of experiences – you can learn about the early history of inland Australia, shop for Aboriginal art and artefacts, see unique desert wildlife, relax in an Outback pub, swim in a natural waterhole, or take a stunning walk through the ranges.

The drive tour from Alice Springs to Uluru includes insights from local cattle station owners, specialist flora and fauna guides and even a singing Dingo! If you are not interested in a particular topic, you can just skip that track and go onto the next. Your tour is up to you!

Red Centre Way (West MacDonnell Ranges)

The spectacular West MacDonnell Ranges stretch for over 200km from Alice Springs. The drive tour along the Red Centre Way, as it is known, will take you on a journey of discovery. Incredible geological forces have created magnificent gaps and gorges; some you can walk through, some you can swim in!

Look for rock wallabies at Simpson’s Gap while feeling the course sand of the dry river bed between your toes, relax with a picnic lunch after a swim at Ellery Creek Big Hole, walk between the majestic cliffs of Ormiston Gorge, or challenge yourself with a half day walk into Ormiston Pound.

After a day of exploring all that the West MacDonnell Ranges have to offer you can relax at Glen Helen Resort. Stop for lunch or stay overnight and watch the sunset. Travel along a different road and stop at Hermannsburg, the home of famous Aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira.

We are currently creating these tours in the reverse direction for added flexibility, as well as several other new adventures in the Central Australian region.

Enrich your visit to the Outback while sticking to your budget

Our audio tours are available as a CD or a downloadable MP3. All youneed is a CD player in your vehicle, or an MP3 device that can be usedin your vehicle, and you have your very own tour guide! DIY Tourguidegives you the freedom to stop where you want and when you want. If youchoose to linger by a refreshing waterhole for a bit longer or take anunplanned overnight stop at a rustic, outback lodge, DIY Tourguide willwait until you are ready to get on the road again.

These tours are fantastic! I've been on tour with Laurelle and she has a wealth of information and makes it so interesting! The interviews with experts are great as well. Highly recommended.

Excellent information - most impressed with the commentry and information - so easy to use and listen too.
We have done both tours after picking up the CD's at Alice Springs Markets - did the West MacDonnells and was so impressed went to Ayers Rock as well (which we were going to bypass on this trip as we have been before)
DIY Tourguide really gave us a fresh look at the amazing Central Australian landscape, it's people and it's flora and fauna.
Recomend it immensly - so easy and cheap - looking forward to reliving our trip through the CD's back in our loungeroom!!

These tours really made the car journey come alive for me. It's like traveling with a friend who has all the good info. I also enjoyed having other local people talk about their stories.

The Alice Springs to Uluru DIY Audio Tour was the best travelling companion we've ever had! We listened intently enjoying the informative and interesting narrative not wanting to miss a thing. Perfectly produced for all ages too. We highly recommend it to anyone making this trip!

Highly recommended as a travelling companion and a souvenir of the trip. A huge improvement on the fumbling with guidebooks that have characterised our previous self-dirve trips - a joy to listen to and very colourful, with commentary, not just by Laurelle, but by local identities and experts. The West MacDonnells DIY Tourguide enriched our trip immeasurably. A trip to Ayers Rock with DIY is on the list for next time. Thanks!

As local Alice Springs residents, we have traversed the Western MacDonnell ranges many times in the past - self driving & also on organised tours. We purchased this cd & tried it out on our latest journey & what a revelation! We learnt so much & it was all delivered in an easy to follow guide, fantastic experts & beautiful delivery. A definate for your journey & we can't wait to get the Uluru cd to make our next journey to the Rock!

I just love the drive tour to Glen Helen especially the bird calls and the information about the snakes from the desert park guide.

Well researched and well presented - I was disappointed when it was over and had to go back to the CD's!
